Bathroom Remodel Completed

What's up, ladies? I know you must have thought I fell off the face of the earth, but I'm still around and still crafting, just not posting as much. Well, it's a new year, and I'm eager to get back into the mix again.

When I last talked to you guys, my bathroom looked something like this:

I finished my bathroom in December 2011, and now it looks like this:

I wish I had the pictures of the original bathroom with the blue and tan PLAID wall paper and 1980s sink and shelving. But that is neither here nor there. I'm loving my new bathroom now. It's just makes me feel good when I'm it!

Review | Butterick 5505 Backpack

Pattern: Butterick 5505 View B

Description: Triangular-shaped, lined backpack, with an outside pocket.

Size: 16" x 15"

Fabric: Faux alligator skin from Joann's

This backpack is another UFO from the fall of 2010. There were some challenges in constructing this backpack.

For starters, the faux alligator skin is slick, so that made marking the fabric difficult. I used chalk, but the marks kept getting rubbed off, so I was constantly remarking the fabric. Also, the this fabric is thick, meant for home decor and such. I broke two needles during the whole process, one hand sewing needled, and the other a leather machine needle.

Other aspects that made this a challenging sew were setting the right tension for the thread and actually using the right thread! I had to set the machine tension to 8 or 9. Also, the upholstery thread did not cooperate with my machine, so I switched to Dual Duty XP Heavy Thread, which is just a thicker version of the regular polyester thread, but it worked much better and made all of the difference.

For the strap, your supposed to cut that piece on the fold, but I did not have enough length on my fabric to do that, so I just two pieces with that added seam allowance. It's bulky at that seam, but it was to be expected considering the nature of the fabric.

The welt zipper went in okay, but the longer zipper was a nightmare. So was inserting the tab with the D-ring. Let's just say there were lots of seam ripping and finagling going on to make it work. But make it work, I did!

Review | Vogue 2850 Anna Sui Blouse

Pattern: Vogue 2850 View B

Description: Close-fitting, empire-waist, sleeveless, wrap top with neck flounce.

Size: 12

Fabric: Some sort of "designer" polyester from Fabric.com. I think it is a bit stiff for this pattern, but the added body of the fabric made it very easy to work with. A silk chiffon or crepe would give this top a more drapey effect.

This is a very straight forward pattern. The pieces are well drafted and fit together easily. I serged all of the seams and used a rolled hem to finish all of the edges. I'm not too crazy about the width of the tie, and this could have been remedied by folding it in half. But at the same time, I like the look of the edging with the rolled hem. The instructions don't tell you to do this, but I would edge-stitch along the entire neckline. It keeps the flounce from rolling in.

This top is a UFO from a least a year ago. All of the pieces were cut out and stored in a bag. I think the style of the top is a bit dated, think early 1990s. But it still looks ultra-feminine. So, for all of the girly-girls out there, this flouncy top is probably right up your alley. I want to pair this particular top with white or off-white pants or capris.

Hey, readers!

I hope you are all doing well this fine Thursday. Here's a rundown of what's een going on in my life.

Hair, Wigs, and Style
Some of you know that three years ago, I decided to stop chemically relaxing my hair. Despite a few minor set backs, it's grown a bunch, but honestly, I was getting bored with my look. I called it the "librarian look." I was wearing protective styles (hair styles that are maintained for an extended period of time with little to no manipulation of the hair strands), but I really didn't like the way my hair looked. I didn't feel attractive all! Plus, I was tired of dealing with my hair.

For any other naturals out there with crazy shrinkage like me (75%) who desire length, you know that waiting patiently for your hair to grow can be like watching paint dry or water boil. It's just best to put it out of your mind and come back to it later.

So I had asked my friend to put in a sew-in weave for me. This way, I could let my hair rest and not be focused on it all of the time. However, the installation process was so painful, I told her to take the tracks out before she was even finished. There was no way in hell I was going to walk around with my head pounding in pain just for the sake of style. If any hair styling requires you to take pain relievers, something is very wrong!

So she suggested that I try out wearing wigs to see what styles I would like and would fit me the best. I took her up on it, and four months later, I have been loving my wigs. Just loving them! They are the perfect protective style for me. My hair stays moisturized and undisturbed. The versatility and styles are endless. Wearing wigs has allow me to stop obsessing about my hair and just focus on living life. Now I feel like I am finally on track with my hair goals, aiming for APL (arm pit length) by this December.

Well, being the Pisces that I am, I am itching for change again. Question to you ladies. Anyone out there ever used the Maxiglide? I just ordered one last night, because I want to try straightening my hair again. I refuse to go back to relaxers. But occasionally, I want to rock a straight look on my own hair, not just through wigs. I'm going to give this Maxiglide a shot and report back to you on how it works for natural 4a/4b hair. Blackmasterpiece posted a pretty convincing review on the flat iron, and her hair turned out amazingly. Let's hope I get the same results.

Bathroom Update
In other news, my new sink and lighting were installed last weekend. They look great, and the bathroom is really starting to come along! I post pics when the bathroom is near completion.

From Tragedy to Triumph: My First Bathroom Remodel

Since last winter, I have been working on redoing my upstairs bathroom.

I purchased my first home October 2009. It's a cute two bedroom/two bathroom townhome in a quaint and quiet community. The unit was built in 1983, and honestly, my bathroom looked like it was stuck in that decade when I bought the home.

Just like any other new home owner, the thrill of having your own place is accompanied by the thrill of personalizing your space and making it feel like home--a home you would be proud to live in and show off to others.

I had, and still have grand plans for this little slice of heaven on earth. But being the procrastinator that I am, I had to get kicked in the butt to generate the needed motivation to get some of these home improvements stated.

So, sometime last year, right before I was going to take a nice relaxing shower, I accidentally yanked off the little shower lever from the tub faucet. Nice! Being competely ignorant of how to make the minor repair, I began using the shower upstairs until my dad could come and fix the one downstairs.

Everything seemed fine until I started noticing the small amounts of rust in the upstairs sinks grow longer and darker. Also, the sink wasn't draining as readily as it used to. Hmm... Then one evening after washing my face at this sink, I heard what sounded like water gushing from under the vanity. I opened the door to see water raining from the bottom of the sink. Final assessment: the sink (probably the original) had rusted completely through.

Damn.

Okay. Let's look at the positives here. I've been wanting to get rid of the unsightly plaid wallpaper anyway, so why not a full bathroom remodel!

Over the course of over six months (yes, I'm slow), and with the help of my momom and dad, I stripped off the old wallpaper, had my Dad and uncle rip out the old sink, retiled the space where my old sink once was, primed and painted the walls, and replace my old shower head. I also had to get a new toilet tank because...that's a whole other story.

I wish now I had pictures of the bathroom before I got started, but let me reassure you: it was nothing to shake a stick at. Anyway, here's my progress so far.

Pattern Description: Trendy knit tops in three variations. I chose view C with the front and side flounces.

Pattern Sizing: 4-20. I made a size 12.

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing? Yes!

Were the instructions easy to follow? The instructions were easy, and the top was super simple to put together.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? What's

not to like about this pattern? It's super cute and trendy, perfect for a night out dancing or on the town. The wearing ease is perfect, the elastic around the back keeps the top fitted quite snuggly to the body. There is no need to fear falling out of this top or exposing "the girls." The only gripe I have abotu this pattern is that it's not quite long enough for my tastes, and the strap was a bit on the short side. But these aspects of the pattern are easy to modify.

Fabric used: Rayon jersey.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: I did not make any this time, but when I make this again in hot pink, I will add 2-3 inches to the straps, lengthen the hem, and lengthen the facing by an inch.

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? I would highly recommend this to others. I would just warn you about the short strap and advise you to lengthen it so that you have enough to work with the make the appropriate adjustments for your body and comfort.

Review | Simplicity 2562 Pants

Pattern Description:Simplicity 2562--Misses'/miss petite wide leg pants with individual pattern pieces given for slim, average and curvy fit. Amazing Fit.

Pattern Sizing: 6-14. I chose to make the size 12 slim fit.

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing? Yes, pretty much, without the center crease.

Were the instructions easy to follow? Yes, the instructions were very easy to follow. For the zipper, I followed the directions to the T, and the fly came out great. The only confusing aspect about the patterns were the instructions for sewing the seam binding to the inner facing. The drawings of the facing and where the seam binding goes are reversed. Also, contrary to the directions, I would bind the whole length of the facing. You'll see what I mean when you look at the diagrams.

Also, the directions tell you to blind hem the cuff using the machine, but I could not for the life of me figure it out. It was not going to work. So I hand stitched the blind hem. It's now my new favorite hand stitch!

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? The fit is perfect. The pants fit my waist and hips like a dream. I seemed to come up short on the cuffs though. I lost the markings where to fold the cuff and had to guesstimate. They should probably be lowered a half inch.

Fabric Used: Some polyester herringbone

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: n/a

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? Yes, I have plans to sew this again. It was kind of tedious, but the results look so RTW and the fit is great!

Review | McCall's 6091 E-book Reader Cover

Pattern Description: McCall's 6091 E-Book Reader Cover: Just like it sounds. It's made to fit devices such as the Kindle.

Pattern Sizing: It comes in two sizes. I made the small one: 5-1/2" x 8-1/2"

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Yes, pretty much.

Were the instructions easy to follow? Very easy.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? I liked that it's the perfect accessory for the my Kindle reader. I like the snap closure and the freedom to embellish the cover however I wish. The only thing I did not like about this pattern was the ribbon that is supposed to hold the Kindle secure. I think the width, 5/8", is too narrow. The Kindle doesn't really stay put like it's supposed to. You need either a wider ribbon or some wide elastic. I think I will try it with elastic next time.

Fabric Used: I used faux leather I found in the discounted scrap bin at Jo-Ann's. I thought the fabric would be perfect for some sort of accessory such as a make-up bag or something similar. I had just enough to make this reader. The pattern calls for cardboard for the front and back inserts, but I used chipboard instead. It's hardier and sturdier than regular cardboard. The 8-1/2" x 11" sheet of chipboard is sufficient for this project.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: I decided to embellish the front because I didn't want a plain cover. Originally, I was going to try to machine embroider some swirls onto the fabric, but that didn't go so well. I used Ribbonwork: The Complete Guide to get some ideas and decided on a daisy motif instead. I had planned to make three flowers, but it proved to be a bit tedious, so I stopped at one.

Each petal is a 4" strip of ribbon knotted in the middle and sewn to a base. I knotted the yellow ribbon and sewed each knot individually to the base to make the center of the flower. I created the stem by twisting the ribbon, knotting it at the bottom and sewing the knot to the faux leather. Each petal is secured with a stitch that runs underneath the faux leather. I did all of this work before I basted the fleece interfacing to the back of the faux leather.

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? Yes, I will make this again. My dad liked it so much, he wants me to make him a similar book cover.

Conclusion: This is a really nice pattern with plenty of opportunity to spruce it up with embellishments and what-not. Very nice gift for a tech-savvy bibliophile.

My New Obsession Hobby

Yeah, it's been a minute.

So, I have taken up crocheting. It's so funny. A few years ago, a friend tried to teach me to crochet. She helped me start a scarf. I worked on that scarf for two years and never finished it. I threw it out. I just didn't have any interest in crocheting.

About a month ago, my Mom showed me a capelet she had made, and I loved it. Then she showed me how to make it. I was hooked, pun intended.

Here it is. I call it my "grandma capelet," because it does look a bit matronly on me. But I wore it with this same top to work, and I thought it looked cute overall.

Here is my next project, a shrug. The only things left to finish are the armholes. I used Lionbrand's Homespun yarn, and it's so soft and fluffy. I can't wait to wear this!

Review | Simplicity 2812 Mini Coat

This is my second time making a coat from this pattern. Two years ago I made the jacket from this pattern. The differences this time around is that I chose the shawl collar and the above-knee-length of the coat. This particular variation includes belts for the waist and sleeves.

Pattern: Simplicity 2812
Fabric: Plaid wool-blend coating
Notions: Five 1" buttons, One 1-11/16" x 1-15/16" buckle, and 2 1-7/16" x 1-11/16" buckles from eJoyce.com.

I didn't make any changes to the pattern and pretty much followed the directions to the tee. I skipped the dropped lining at the bottom of the coat and just made an even hem. I couldn't figure it out when I made the jacket, and I didn't feel like messing with it this time. I had planned to add some fusible fleece to the lining, but I thought it would make the coat, with its already thick fabric, too bulky. Now I kind of wish I had added the fusible fleece to the back pieces, but it's done now. I'll just wear sweaters underneath it. Oh, I also sewed on snaps instead of making buttonholes. The fabric was too thick for my buttonhole function to work, and I couldn't stomach the idea of handsewing them. My mother suggested snaps, and I say that was a brilliant solution. Mom to the rescue! I sewed the buttons on top for the look of it. Pictures are below. Next up: some new work outfits.

A Coat from Last Fall

Just like the McCall's jacket from last fall, I also started another project around the same time that I never completed and ended up stuffing in a bag in my closet.

I'm loving this jacket/coat kick that I'm on. (Next up is a trench coat for the spring. See, I'm planning ahead!) The pattern I'm working with is Simplicity 2812. I made the jacket in a quilted fabric two years ago. It's a good pattern that is well-drafted and easy to put together. This time I'm using it to make a winter mini coat with a shawl collar. So far I have the outer shell done. I just need to finish the lining (which is partially done) and other details. I want to say the fabric is a boucle, but now I'm not sure. It's definitely a loosely woven jacket/suit fabric. Not the easiest to work with because it unravels a bit at the edges. However, I'm loving the color and the direction this coat is going.

Here's where I am so far in the process. I'll keep ya'll up to date!

9/21/2010 ETA: I just finished the lining last night. Looks like I might be done by this weekend.

Done! McCall's Military Style Jacket

It was a year in the making. I actually cut out all the pieces, including the lining, bought all the notions, and made all of the markings a year ago, almost to the day. I began sewing the outer portion but got sidetracked and never finished. Well, here she is, just in time for fall.

Pattern: McCalls's 5190 (out of print)

Fabric: Jacket--faux nubuck leather; lining--brocade

Notions: Six 5/8" copper-look buttons

Changes I made to the pattern: Modeling this after the Tory Burch Sgt. Pepper Jacket, I made breast and lower pockets. I also did bound buttonholes (outside and inside) on the pockets and down the front. I made regular buttonholes for the epaulets, because I thought bound ones would be too thick for such a small piece. I added some topstitching down the center front and along the bottom edge of the jacket and cuffs.

Overall, I am so pleased with this jacket. The time it took to construct and the extra attention to all the detailing were well worth the wait!

Time to Organize!

Does your fabric stash get as unwieldy as mine? I've gone to pains to organize the small space where I store my bounty. However, even though my fabric is put away most of the time, it's out of sight out of mind. Oh, and how many yards of that cotton lawn do I have again?

I found this nifty fabric stash organizer template on QuiltingArts.com. The template is free, but you have to create an account with QuiltingArts.com to access the download. I'm going to try this out. I like the layout of the template in which you can create a notebook of fabric swatches for easy reference or cut the individual swatches out for a handy to-go booklet.

Being the organizing freak that I am, the template is right up my alley. I swear, I live by three-ring binders. I'm going to give this a shot update you.

I am almost done with the jacket. I might have to let out a seam or two, as it's bit snug, but otherwise, it's looking great!

A Little Craftiness-- Journals and Greeting Card Boxes

While on my sewing hiatus, my attention turned to paper crafting. A friend let my borrow her spiral punch to make journal covers. I simply punched the long edge of the cardstock, decorated the front, and glued the cover to the front of the journal. The results are cute, personalized journals, perfect for recording thoughts and creativity.

One day I'm going to learn how to take clearer pictures.

The following are greeting card holders that can hold up to six cards, or maybe four heavily embellished cards. I found and used this template from Mirkwood Designs. This is great way to package cards for gifts or sale. I used DCWV (Die Cuts With a View) cardstock. The sheets with the "lacquered" look and texture were stiffer than regular cardstock and held the shape of the holder beautifully. I scored the template with a stylus rather than a scoring blade to avoid inadvertently cutting the paper. The finished dimensions of the holders are 6x4.5 inches.

Working on a Jacket from Last Fall

Last fall I began working on the McCall's 5190 (out of print) jacket. I fell in love with this jacket from a local boutique, but the thing retailed at $839. That's $839!!! So, I decided, "I can make that."

But somewhere among house hunting, closing, moving, and settling in, I let this project (and others) fall by the wayside. And with all of the proper detailing, I think I bit off a bit more than I could chew; the project was just way over my head (or so I thought).

No lie, my sewing mojo was in hibernation for the past six months. Other interests took over, and I just couldn't seem to get my desire back. In a perpetual state of planning, I've been on a sort of fabric binge in preparation for when my desire to sew returned. I also think a steady diet of Project Runway jump started my creativity again.

Well, I think it has. And this jacket serves as my foray back into the sewing world. As a side note, this post is for my coworker who doesn't believe I'm back in the sewing game.

ETA: I used faux nubuck leather for the jacket and brocade for the lining. It's fairly easy to work with. I'm using a 100/16 needle for imitation leather and scrap fabric as a press cloth to press the seams.

I found this new (to me) bound buttonhole technique from Stitch in My Side that I quite like. Bound buttonholes are difficult anyway, but this method cuts out some of the tedious steps for a very neat and polished result.

My goal is to finish this jacket by this weekend. I'll keep you posted!

Mary J. Blige--"Be Happy" (1994). This song is from the My Life album, arguably the best album she ever recorded, imho. Her voice is so raw and emotional in every track. You can literally feel her pain and her joy in every note. I would say "Be Happy" is my life song. It's so universal. Who doesn't desire to be happy? "Life is too short to be trying to play some games." Well said, Mary.

The Rustic Beauty of Durham Part 3: Duke Gardens

It's that time of year. Duke Gardens is beginning to overflow with the lush blooms and blossoms of spring.

These pictures are, again, for my photography class. I went out to Duke Gardens yesterday and snapped over 100 pictures. From those pictures I was required to submit three. I submitted four because I couldn't make up my mind which ones I liked best. Yesterday was breezy, and I went to the gardens in late afternoon, so the conditions were not ideal for good picture taking. I had to beg the flowers to stop waving in the wind long enough for me to take some close-ups. And I got yelled at by one of the caretakers for standing on the stone wall in the terraces.

Enough of my blathering. I'll let the pictures speak for themselves. I'll share some more this week.

The Rustic Beauty of Durham

I'm taking this photography class for my job, and our first homework assignment was to take lots of pictures. Then we were to employ cropping and the rule of thirds to compose our final products. Downtown Durham was my subject. I have a lot to learn about taking photos, because I found it difficult to be inspired by what I saw, or didn't see. Not to mention that downtown Durham in undergoing a revitalization project, so there are construction cones, barricades, yellow tape, gravel, and dust all over the place. Not exactly a picturesque environment. My attempt was to capture the rustic quality of the downtown area and to somehow tell a story through the pictures.

Flounces, Ruffles, and Gathers for Spring

With spring right around the corner, my sewing antenna tends to turn to pretty, feminine frocks, the perfect complement the dogwood and azalea blossoms. Of all the seasons in North Carolina, spring is my favorite, despite my allergies. (BTW, I have found that daily consumption of organic, cold-pressed coconut oil and local raw honey during allergy season helped alleviate about 60-70% of my allergy symptoms.)

So, of course, I have spring sewing plans on the brain.

This dress, Burda 7682, the maxi dress to end all maxi dresses, is a leftover from last summer's plans. Or was it summer of 2008?

My fabric
Anyway, I am determined to make this dress. You know I'm not crazy about halters, but the design and the fabric were such an inspiration to me, I just had to set aside my prejudices this one time. I think what stopped me in my tracks the last time with this dress is the bottom ruffle. The pattern piece was a bit opaque as to how long the ruffle was supposed to be. I think it said 72 inches. I mean, that's six feet of ruffles! And then the issue of fitting the bodice for which I'll probably have to do an FBA. But now that my mojo has been somewhat revived, I think I'm ready to tackle these challenges.

I picked up Vogue 2850 a couple of weeks ago.I like this style, even if it is a bit dated. However, I saw a favorable review on PR that resparked my interest in this pattern, and ruffles and flounces are my weakness, so... Sorry I don't have a pic of the fabric for this, but this project is next in queue, so you'll see pics of it soon enough.

At first I wasn't crazy about it, but it has some design elements that are interesting, such as the piping in the bodice, the gathering, and the curved hemline. So I went a little crazy and bought some cotton lawn I thought would work well with this:

Kind of frumpy, but it has a quaint vintage look I like.
Love this. If not for this dress, I'll find something it works with.

Easy Project, Great Results

I finished the McCall's 4876 skirt today and got to wear it out ballroom dancing. The flounces on the skirt were just perfect for whirling and twirling across the dance floor! This will also double as a work outfit.

This skirt consist of eight gores and eight flounces inserted in the skirt seams. I've made this before in a woven. It was a doozy since I interlined that skirt and it was my first time using a serger.

This time, I used gray stretch polyester jersey. I used black thread for a rolled hem for the flounces to create a nice contrast.

Here's where I attached each flounce to each gore.

I also opted to omit the facing for the waist. Instead I made a casing and inserted 1/2" elastic to fit the skirt right on my waist.

Finished product with Burda 05-2009-103A top.

My Birthday and Simple Project to Revive the Mojo

Hey, ya'll! It's my birthday! You know, I didn't make huge plans for today, and I was so ready to be down in the dumps about being another year older, not to mention that it's slightly above freezing and snowing, but God just gave me such a joy this today. The snow was fluffy and light, and it just added a sweet back drop to the morning. On my way to work I popped in a CD of the S.O.S. Band. I don't know how many of you are familiar with this '80s R&B band, and they were popular when I was a kid. But for some reason, my memories of this band's songs are associated with trips to New York City to see my mom's family. And so listening to the S.O.S. Band on the way to work was like being wrapped up in a warm blanket of nostalgia. Not a bad way to start the morning.

Okay, onto my mojo. It's on its way back. And I think the key to this for me is to take up projects that are easy and "instant gratification." Below are pictures of the Burda WOF 5-2009-103A top. I traced out this pattern for the top and corresponding dress last year and finally got around to making it. I made a size 38, but I think I could have gone down a size. The construction es muy facil, and I didn't even look at the instructions. It's just a simple surplice top with a midriff.

First I sewed the pleats on the bodice and the darts on the lower back piece.

Then joined the lower backs together, and the upper backs together (there is a center back seam) and then joined the two with the midriff piece.

Note about the midriff piece: Unless I read the pattern wrong, the pattern says cut two on the fold, but it ends up being twice as long. You really only need to cut two midriff pieces, not on the fold. I took one of my too long pieces and simply cut it in half to a have a piece for the front and the back.

Then I joined the front bodice pieces and the whole back at the shoulder and then finished the inside edge.

I overlapped the bodice pieces (I don't think there was a mark to indicate the center front. I just used my dress form to figure it out.) Basted the two pieces together and then joined them to the front midriff and lower front piece.

Then my favorite part {being sarcastic}: the sleeves. I'm a fan of sewing sleeves in flat, and that's what I did here. After I put the sleeves in, I just zipped it up the sides.

Done except for the hemming.

I'm in the process of cutting out this McCall's 4876 skirt View A to go with the top. It's way out of print. I don't even think McCall's has it in the archives anymore. Instead of a woven, I'm attempting it in a gray stretch knit, a jersey. This will make it an easy slip-on skirt with no need of a zipper. I hope to finish this by the weekend so I can go dancing in it on Sunday.

Back on Facebook...For Now...

In February 2009, I posted about how I was disgusted with Facebook and how I deleted my account. That was an interesting and somewhat heated discussion. A well-known blogger actually "de-followed" me because I wouldn't let her address me like an idiot in the comments section, on my own blog. Well, now I'm back on so I can stay in touch with people who are too lazy to call or email me. Initially, I got back on because of work so I could stay up-to-date on various aspects of my job. You gotta go where the people are, so there I am. Hopefully, I'll be able to see an old college friend this summer, so that makes it worth it. I'm not, however, going to friend everyone from my high school or college classes. Most of those connections are long over. I'm just acquiring a select group of real friends and true acquaintances, because I don't have time for BS and the appearance of popularity.

I just talked to a lady today. She asked me about my cat Fifi. Fifi is going on nineteen, pretty old for a cat. I was telling her that Fifi has developed some health problems due to her age, but that she's been doing better. For some reason, this woman thought this was comical and that my cat being almost nineteen is "hilarious." Come again? How is a cat being nineteen "hilarious"? How many people can boast that their pet is eighteen or nineteen? I think Fifi's age is a testament good genes, perhaps, and also how well my family has cared for her. Isn't her advanced age something to be celebrated rather than ridiculed? Maybe if she was a dog, would that have engendered more sympathy from this individual? Sometimes I really don't know where people's heads are when they say the things they say. It surely doesn't make me want to talk about my cat with this woman again, and I won't. I'm not equating Fifi's life to a human's, but she is a part of the family, and we do care for her. I've always seen Fifi as my hardy, resilient, fiesty younger sister. To make fun of this creature is just a little insensitive. Okay, moving on now.

Hair Journey Retrospective

As the year is winding down, I'm sure a lot of you sewists out there are taking stock of your 2009 creations. I thought about doing that, but instead wanted to quickly chronicle my hair journey. If you've been following my blog for more than two years, you have noticed that my hair has changed quite a bit. I have gone from relaxing my afro-textured hair to what we black women call "going natural." In January 2008, I made decision to stop chemically relaxing my hair. I wore a weave for a good four or five months while I grew out my natural hair. By August of 2008, I was ready for what we in the natural community call the Big Chop. I cut off all of my relaxed hair ends to reveal about three inches of tightly coiled hair--my hair. It was the most liberating experience for me. To this very day, I consider going natural one of the best decisions I have made for my self. Below are a series of pictures dating from September 2008 until present that chronicle my natural hair journey. I hope you all enjoy it. Please feel free to leave your questions or comments.

I just took the above picture from my new home. The little white dots are snow flakes. I took a half day and got home just before it started snowing. Raleigh, NC, may get an inch or two. Pooh! That means my Saturday ballet class will probably be canceled. Never fear. I have plenty at home to keep me busy: sewing, jewelry making, puttering around the house. If I don't have class tomorrow, I'm treating myself to a pancake breakfast!

I actually have been sewing. Craft sewing! My mother made a couple of cloth dolls for my soon to be step-niece, and I helped her out by making a dress to go along with Christmas gifts. I made the pink and black floral dress with matching bloomers (not shown). It was from fabric left over from a BWOF dress I made a few months ago.

I think the dolls and the dresses came out rather cute!

On another note, I have been pondering these two questions lately:

1. Why do people with junky cars always want drive and you to ride with them? And then you've got to wait for them to move papers, trash, baby seats, etc. out of the way so you can sit down. :-/
2. Why is it that people who cannot cook want you to come over for dinner?

I'm not saying--I'm just saying.

Pet Peeve of the Day

I try not to complain. I really do. And this is just one of my idiosyncratic personality blips, so I'm not looking for reader psychoanalysis or explanations for why some people are trifling. What really irritates me a few day ago was when I requested from a group of people that if they could help me with an important task, please contact me. Notice I specified if they could help to contact me. Why then do I get replies from folks saying they can't help me and some lame excuse why not? Did I ask if you couldn't help me? No, I didn't. Reading is fundamental. If you can't help, then don't respond. That's my thinking, anyway. Okay, just had to get that off of my chest.

Please share your pet peeve of the day as well so I don't feel like a complete sourpuss all by myself! LOL!

Old School Friday | Not Sure Why They're Famous

Can't stand these guys. There's not one good looking one in the bunch, and their music was always borderline raunchy. Silk wasn't as polished as Boyz II Men, and, imho, their songs weren't as powerfully sung as Jodeci's. But I know people liked them and bought their albums. I was not one of them, and this is the only song of their's that I like.

The only song I like by 112 is the one featured. I primarily enjoyed this song as a college freshman because the beat goes hard, Biggie delivered a slick verse, and Puff/Diddy capped it off with some non-annoying adlibs. Other than that, I could never figure out why Slim sung most of the leads with his whiny, paper-thin voice.

I'm closing on my house this Friday and plan to move next Saturday. I'm going to be super busy packing next week, so all sewing projects are on hold until I get settled in my new place!

I won't make the deadline for Pattern Review's Wardrobe Contest, but I'll continue to putter along and work on the pieces I intended to finish. So it may end up being a mini wardrobe, which is fine with me.

Halloween Outfit and Fifi Candids

I just wanted to post a pic of my Halloween get-up. It was so fun dressing up as a "Disco Diva." The costume was a hit last Saturday and Sunday for a couple of parties I went to. The hair is a wig, though if I blow my own hair out, it's about the same diameter. I was called everyone from Donna Summer to Diana Ross to Angela Davis (???). Aside from her being much lighter in complexion than me, I don't think Angela Davis would be prancing around in a sequined mini dress and go go boots. But what do I know?

At the request of my coworker, I'm treating you all to pictures of my family member and new roommate Ms. Fifi.

As you see, she's here plotting her move to plop her little furry behind on the faux leather for my McCall's jacket.She changed her mind and sat on the instructions instead.I don't think she intends to move.

Old School Friday | Sade

Aww, shoot! It's Old School Friday, and Sade is the theme. My love for Sade goes way back to my Vermont days. My mom loved Sade and passed the appreciation of her music onto me. Easily, my favorite album of Sade is Stronger than Pride (1988). Listening to the title track reminds me of my mother and I driving home on the beltline at night after choir practice in her seafoam Buick Regal (limited edition!).

Review | Jalie 2908 Stretch Jeans

Pattern Description: Jalie 2908 stretch jeans: "Women's flattering stretch jeans with slim fit through the hips and thigh and a flared leg, back and side front pockets, zip fly with button closure. View A has a low rise (2-3 inches below the navel) and View B has a regular rise (at the navel)."

Pattern Sizing: I made View A in a Size T.

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing? Yes, except the model has no hips, apparently...

Were the instructions easy to follow? Yes. I followed the pictures mostly, and read the print instructions when I needed clarification. I used Sandra Betzina's tutorial for inserting a zipper in a fly front. Her video was good, but her instructions have you insert the zipper on the left, which I guess is common for slacks. So I reversed her instructions to put my zipper on the right.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? I like that the pattern is made for stretch demin. They look very ready to wear. Even thought I made a size T, I still feel like they are a bit snug in the thigh and the across hips. I figured they just need breaking in, so I wore them practically all day and even danced in them. By the evening, they had loosened up and felt more comfortable. I'm sure after a few more wears and a few more washings, they'll be perfect.

Fabric used: Stretch demin (4% lycra) from Fabric.com. I prewashed the denim twice for shrinkage and to remove excess dye. I still had some dye come off on my fingers though.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: I did make a 1" dart in the center back of the waistband to eliminate "gaposis." It worked great. The waistband fits along the conture on my waist perfectly with no gaps or gapes, something I'm rarely able to find in RTW jeans. Also, I added a coin pocket. EDITED TO ADD: I copied my back pockets from a pair of RTW jeans.

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? I'd like to make the regular rise jeans sometime in the future. I would most definitely recommend this pattern to anyone who wants to try jeans. I think the pattern fits the curves of a woman's body, so you'll get a very nice silhouette. Just make sure you go by hip measurement. I probably could go up a size in the hips, but I think a couple of wears will help me break them in.

Conclusion This is my third time making jeans. My first pair was a disasterous McCall's 5142. They looked okay, but the denim did not have enough stretch and the crotch depth was off. The second pair I made was this Jalie pattern. They looked cute, but were a size R--too small. So the third time's the charm, and I was finally able to construct some wearable jeans. I'm pretty pleased with the way they came out, and will wear them a lot!

Thank you those who responded to my last post about the child-free gal and scrapbooking. I received a lot of helpful tips on what I can scrapbook about in this season of life. Some of the suggestions included outdoor photography, stages of a sewing project, chronicling a year of my life--like a visual diary, and a recipe scrapbook. These are great ideas, which I hope to use in the near future.

House update: My radon test didn't go too well. The level is above the EPA maximum. I'm requesting that the seller conduct a second test to see if the reading is any different. If it's still above the accepted level, hopefully the seller will pay for the radon mitigation.

Jalie Jeans update: I should have a review up tomorrow.

McCall's Jacket update: I just finished cutting out all the pieces for my McCall's 5190 jacket. There were a lot of pieces, plus lining. I don't think I'm going to interface this jacket, except for the collar and the cuffs. The faux leather is pretty thick already; we'll see. I'm using brocade for the lining to give the jacket some wearing longevity throughout the winter, which tends to be mild in NC.

What are ya'll doing for Halloween? I'm going to a dance party dressed as a Disco Diva--wig and all! No, I'm not making the costume--not enough time. What are your plans?

Childlessness Child-freeness and Scrapbooking

A couple of years ago, I started getting into scrapbooking. At that time, I was dating, and I wanted to chronicle our little excursions and trips together. I also wanted to chronicle my 2006 trip to visit my brother in San Francisco. But I found the creative process tedious and extremely time-consuming. Not to mention, it seemed like I kind of ran out of ideas on what to scrapbook about. So my scrapbooking phase kind of ended. Fast forward to a year ago, in attempt to revive my scrapbooking mojo, I signed up for email updates from Scrapbooks, etc. But I found that most of the featured layouts displayed all ages of children. Not that I minded, but it seemed to suggest that scrapbooking is for people who want to chronicle the lives of their children.

Nothing wrong with that, but where does that leave the childless gal (or guy) who has limited desire to feature children in her scrapbook? Unless she wanted to get picture of other people's kids. What is this presumption that if you are a woman who likes to scrapbook, you must like to scrapbook about your children? What if you don't have any children? Will the cat or dog suffice?

It also got me to thinking about the topic of ~~childlessness~~ child-freeness and societal expectation for women to become mothers. Most women do become mothers, and they love the role that being a mother gives them.

I, however, have never had a strong desire to become a mother. I don't know why. I just never have. I'm 30+, and I'm still waiting for this biological clock to start ticking, but it just hasn't yet. The only time I started feeling that pressure was during Mother's Day this past May. I think I sang in church that day. I can't quite remember, but what I do remember is the looks of pity various women shot my way when they saw me. One lady tried to encourage me by saying that I'm a good "spiritual mother." She didn't really elaborate on what she meant by that. I guess that was her way of "comforting" me in my ~~childlessness~~ child-freeness. Another lady, who has a high position at church told me, "Happy Mother's Day, someday, in the future," or some sort of mess. It really just made me want to chuckle. I guess these women thought I was cursing the day because I don't have any little ones nipping at my heels. Actually, I felt quite the opposite. I was happy for the mothers there, but I was in no way bemoaning my own ~~childlessness~~ child-freeness.

I always believed that when I met the "right" man, my desire for children would kick in--you know having the "total package." Well, that hasn't happened yet, and thankfully, my desire for children has remained dormant. It would be pure torture to have two unfulfilled dreams. One is enough.

So back to the original issue. ~~Childlessness~~ Child-freeness and scrapbooking. I think that was one of the main reasons I stopped scrapbooking. It seemed like it was only for mothers, and since I'm not a mother, what would I scrapbook about?

Are there any ~~childless~~ child-free gals out there who love to scrapbook? What do you scrapbook about? Do you have any examples? Please share!

Old School Friday | Freshmen Year of High School

This was really hard. There are so many good songs from this year, the year I was a North Carolina high school freshman. So many of these songs bring back specific emotions and memories.

Jodeci "Stay"--I had an iron-clad crush on Devante. Too bad he couldn't preserve his sexy. He fell off big time. :-(

En Vogue "My Lovin' (You're Never Gonna Get It)"-- One of the fiercest female groups of all time, imho. This song solidified them as the funky divas they were. I remember imitating their choreography in my living room. I think is the first single that featured Maxine on lead vocals.

Arrested Development "Tennessee"--The girls I hung with loved this song. I mean loooved it. They would recite it every day at lunch. It got quite annoying. I still like the song though.

Nirvana "Smells Like Teen Spirit"--This was the time that my classmates began donning flannel shirts (in NC!) and Birkenstocks. Not to mention dying their hair with Kool-Aid, I kid you not. Fun times.

Jeans success and other developments

It's October!

Okay, I'm kind of late, but can you believe it's October already? Isn't that wild? This year has flown by. Fall is my favorite time of year. Even though I'm cold-natured, I love the change in the weather from muggy to crisp, and I love seeing the foilage change. It's also turtleneck and sweater season. What's not to love?

JeansIs it wrong to go out and by this cute red sweater from Kohl's rather than make it (can't find a picture at present)? It will go great with my jeans, which are almost done! And they fit! I was smart this time. I re-bought the Jalie pattern and traced the pieces out in a larger size. It was tedious tracing and cutting out all of the pieces (for both views), but in the end it is worth it. I still have the original pattern that I can retrace and modify at will. All I have left of the major construction is the waist band and carriers (and button, rivets, hemming, etc., but those things don't really count). This might be the last time I make jeans. They are just so labor intensive.

My Dad is turning 60!Whoa! I can't believe my Dad (on the right) is turning sixty this month! He still looks good for his age, despite his smoking habit. My mom and I are going to have a small dinner party for him, despite his protestations.

I'm about to become a homeowner!After about three months of searching, I put in an offer for a cute two-bedroom townhouse, and it was accepted! I'll be doing inspections tomorrow! I hope to close by mid-November. Just in time for the $8,000 tax credit. Sweet.

I got a cat!This is the family cat, Fifi. She's 18 years old. She lived with my parents up until two weeks ago when I finally decided to take her. I had reservations about moving her to my apartment, but this inside/outside cat has adjusted pretty well to apartment living. Soon we'll have a new home anyway. It's nice having a little friend to come home to, even if she begs me for food most of the time.

I've taken up go go dancing...A couple of weeks ago, on a whim, I auditioned for this go go girl dance gig for the 60th anniversary for my city's historic shopping center. The theme is 1960s Groove Fest, so I'll be strutting in my white go go boots and mini dress to the Twist, the Pony, the Swim, the Backstroke, the Jerk, the Hitchhike, and the Mashed Potato to a Beatles tribute band. This is the outfit three other girls and I are wearing. How fun is that?

That's all that's going on for me right now. I'll be sure to post a review of the Jalie jeans as soon as they're done.

Fall/Winter Wardrobe Preliminary Storyboard

Here's a preliminary storyboard for my Fall/Winter wardrobe and possible Pattern Review contest entry. I'm a little behind the curve here as far as securing fabrics, but I have a pretty good vision of what kind of wardrobe I want to create. Most of these patterns are simple or tried-and-true. The only complicated one will be the jacket.

I'll update with fabric swatches once I decide on them. I did decide to buy that indigo denim for my redemption Jalie jeans. I might also throw a hat in the mix if I have time to make it. I think it's so cute and will go well with the McCall's jacket.

Okay, since I botched my Jalie jeans, I really want to redeem myself. Fabric.com is out of the deep blue stretch denim I originally used. The only other stretch denim they have is this dark indigo.
There's no telling when they're going to get the color I wanted in. Should I just go ahead and get this indigo color? I'm not sure how I feel about it. It's not quite black, but it's not the classic blue I wanted either. And what do I topstitch it with? White?

Okay...my Jalie jeans are not going to work out. It's my own fault and a lesson learned. I should have traced the dang pattern! I tried a size R low rise. It was WAY too small! I'm upset, because my back pockets are the business. I think I need to go up two sizes and try the natural rise. Oh well... I don't have the heart to throw the pants out, and I still have to finish the waistband. I'm going to try to find a good home for these jeans, because I put too much work into them to ditch them.

I've been brainstorming a new fall wardrobe for quite some time. I don't know what it is about fall, but I always feel a sense of newness and possibility when the weather turns a bit crisper and clearer. For some reason, I always associate fall with new beginnings, like a student when the first semester of the year rolls around.

And what better time to create a new wardrobe!

To clarify, SWAP is an acronym for "sewing with a plan." This informative article was the inspiration for my first SWAP.

The Pattern Review Wardrobe Contest is underway, and I think it would be fun to participate this year. The wardrobe has to be completed by November 30, same day by which I need to close on a house...

The criteria are four bottoms, five tops, and one topper (jacket, cardigan, poncho, etc.). All tops must go with all the bottoms, and a minimum of one print fabric must be incorporated. I'm working on my story board right now, and here are some of the patterns I have selected.

Remembering 9/11: WTC 7

I've been following the 9/11 Truth Movement for some time. Just like most Americans, I believed the official story of 9/11, that Islamic terrorists who "hated our freedoms" used box cutters to hijack four commericial airlines and ran the planes into the Pentagon, the Twin Towers, but were thwarted in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

One day I stumbled upon some website touting 9/11 "conspiracies". These people purported that not only did the US government let the attacks occur, but some people in the government were actually complicit in the attacks. At that time, I was incredulous to such theories and suggestions--that people in the government would be so evil as to allow or even help these attacks to occur, all as a pretext for war in the Middle East, among other agendas. It just couldn't be!

What caused me to totally question the official story was when I saw a video of WTC 7 collapse (in the third video, Dan Rather comments that building looks like one that was deliberately brought down). I remember seeing the collapse happen on live TV that fateful Tuesday, despite it not having been hit by a plane. But I did not really understand what had just happened. However, years later, when I looked at the collapse of WTC 7 again, along with the Twin Towers, and compared their demise to a controlled demolition, the deal was sealed for me. Those buildings were brought down by explosives, not jet fuel. Those buildings were massive, and were created to withstand the impact of a commercial airliner.

How did city officials and emergency response teams know WTC 7 was going to collapse, despite the few fires? Why did reporter Jane Standley from BBC World say that WTC 7 had already collapsed despite the building clearing showing over her left shoulder (your right) in the background of her live broadcast--23 minutes before the fact?

Review | Amy Butler Nigella Yoga Bag

I've been taking yoga twice a week at work during my lunch hour, and I wanted a cute bag so I could carry my mat in style! Then I remembered I had this pattern and decided to give it a whirl. This was a nice instant gratification project after my Butterick debacle.

Pattern: Amy Butler Nigella Yoga Bag

Pattern Sizing: Finished measurements are approximately 24" length and 5-1/2" diameter. It fits a standard-size yoga mat.

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing? Yes.

Were the instructions easy to follow? Amy Butler's pattern instructions tend to be text-heavy and very detailed, so read carefully. The instructions, however, are very easy and good for beginners with reminders to backstitch and what-have-you.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? It's free. That's always a winner. It's also very simple. Basically, the pattern pieces consist of three rectangles and a circle. I like the inclusion of pockets for water bottles and other things. It would have been nice if it included a drawstring or some kind of closure, but I also appreciate the open top. It makes inserting and removing the yoga mat hassle free.

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? I thought about sewing it again and adding a drawstring closure, but not any time soon.

My First Dud in a Long While

So, in effort to crank up my sewing mojo and get it in working order again, I decided to finish up a UFO that's been languishing in my sewing room for a month, Butterick 5178. It got rave reviews on Pattern Review, and all of the versions I saw looked great. I was motivated to finish it up and wear it for dancing.

First of all, I wanted to make the maxi length, because ya'll know I love maxi dresses. Well, my stretch rayon jersey was originally intended for a BWOF dress, but I thought the fabric would be too thin for the body hugging design. So I opted to make the knee-length Butterick instead.

The instructions were very easy, but the construction was tedious. I lost/misplaced one of the elastic guides for the bodice and had to guesstimate on how gathered the bodice needed to be in some parts. (I found the pattern piece after the fact.) I had to insert and reinsert the elastic at some points because it kept coming out of my elastic tool. Then I kept getting caught in the seam half way through, and it was pretty maddening. I was teetering on the edge of sanity at that point. Finally, I got to the armhole facing, and just gave up. I folded up the remaining pieces and sat them on top of my book shelf for a good month.

Just this past weekend I decided to put lay this baby to rest and finish her. Well, I almost did. Once I got the last piece of elastic in, I tried the dress on, and disappointment swirled over me. The dang armholes were too large (or the bodice was too small) revealing my strapless bra. Argh! Without a bra, you can see too much.

I just don't have the energy to try and salvage this dress. I think I'm going to finish it up and give it away. It's too cute not to be worn by someone.

Well, it's all good. Not every project is a success. I have a dress and mini SWAP in the works, so stay tuned!

Just Checking In...

Wow! It's been two whole months since I last posted. I think my sewing mojo crawled into a hole and died somewhere during that time. I have had no motivation or inspiration to sew a stitch. I started a dress and just couldn't bring myself to complete it. Then I cut out a dress last week but am just feeling too lazy to change out the serger thread. Sigh. I even had plans to make my first bathing suit, but that kind of went out the door, along with the phenomenal Burda maxi dress I had planned to make.

I've been reading a lot though, the Twilight Trilogy to be exact. I'm halfway through Eclipse, and I'm really not liking Bella or Edward right now! LOL!

I think I just need to start over with a new sewing plan. Maybe even a new SWAP for the fall. I saw a cute military-style jacket in an email newsletter that's being sold in a Chapel Hill boutique for $839. I think I can make it for slightly less using McCalls 5190. What do ya'll think? Of course, it will be a while before the weather calls for a jacket in North Carolina, but it's always good to get a head start.

I've also been house hunting, so that's taken up quite a bit of my energy. I put an offer on a cute two bedroom townhome, so we'll see what happens with that. If it doesn't work out, I know God has something else for me, and I'm not worried.

It's been fun checking in on everyone else's sewing and crafting. A good pal of mine, Andrea, caught the quilting bug and opened up her own Etsy shop: Greener Beginnings. Check it out! Her quilts are fab, and made with love.

And I need to get on my hustle and do what I know the Lord has been gifted me and encouraged me to do as well through other people. Pray I'll get over my fears and drum up the motivation to make it happen!

Review | Burda WOF 05-2009-117 Dress

Pattern Description: "This stylised floral print could have been designed by Andy Warhol! A slim silhouette tapers slightly in at the hem to emphasize feminine curves, and charming side slits let you walk freely."

Pattern Sizing: 36-44. I made a size 38.

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing? Yes! My skirt seems to pucker in the front instead of lie flat like the model picture.

Were the instructions easy to follow? Burda rated this an intermediate pattern. The only challenging part was inserting the side back and side front pieces and getting a perfect point at the armpit. I didn't do too well on the front, but aced the back. I should have reversed it and did the back first so I could perfect the technique for the front!

I scanned the directions, but ended up using my own sequence.

1. I sewed the pleats and darts in the skirt front and back. I joined the skirt center back up to the zipper insertion point.
2. Sewed the pleats in bodice front and joined the bodice front and back at the shoulders.
3. I joined the front and back facings together (serged the edge) and sewed them to the bodice front and back. Understitched. Tacked at shoulders.
4. Overlapped and basted the right and left front bodice pieces together the sides and bottom.
5. Joined the side fronts and side backs to the bodice front and back.
6. Joined the front skirt to the front bodice and the back skirt to the back bodice. Then I sewed the dress up the sides in one pass, leaving the sides slits at the bottom.
7. Hemmed the sleeves, and skirt.
8. Inserted zipper. Tacked facing to inside.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? The model fabric drew me to the pattern. I liked the fitted waist and pencil skirt and thought the side front and side back design was an interesting feature.

Fabric Used: Floral cotton stretch sateen.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: I added some hot fix rhinestones to cover up a few boo boos.

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? Yes, I plan to sew this again, since I consider this more of a wearable muslin. I already ordered the fabric, another floral stretch cotton sateen. I would recommend this dress to others. It's a good work/church/semi-formal type dress.

Card Blitz--I'm Feeling the Rose Stamp!

I caught the card making bug and have been compelled to stamp away.

See, this what happens when I make cards--total and utter chaos! LOL! That's why I don't do it often. I just get overwhelmed with all the stuff!

This card is for a friend whose birthday is coming up. I copied this right out of the Stampin' Up catalogue, because I loved it so much. She better like it, 'cause I put A LOT of work into this joker! LOL. Oh, and blender pens rock!

Aren't these flowers just lush? The rose is my favorite, as you will see.

Again, blender pen to the rescue. It took this card up a few notches from what I was previously going to settle for.

The rose looks nice embossed as well.

It's nice to have another craft to fall back on when my sewing mojo goes south. I have several projects planned. Dresses galore! Developing...

All Dressed Up and Nowhere to Go

This isn't really a review since I've made Simplicity 3503 before. The only things I did differently this time around are cutting the bodice at a size 6 and the skirt at a size 8. Also, the dress is completely lined with pink tricot. The fabric is a shimmery pink knit. It is sooo pretty! The dress is not hemmed--yet! But I just wanted to post some pictures since I've been talking so much about it.

I've got to wear this somewhere. It kind of occurred to me tonight that sewing could be a form of adult dress up! It's so cool that we seamstresses have the ability to create any kind of look we want. We can fashion ourselves according to our moods. In this dress, I feel elegant and regal. Now I just need a ball to crash! :-)

Hey, ya'll, I'm here, just so you know I have not dropped off the face of the earth.

I haven't been working on too much sewing, but inspired by Erica B.'s latest creation, I decided to finish up my second Simplicity 3503 dress, same view as before. Click HERE to see my first. This dress has been a UFO since last winter. I was all jazzed about making it and then lost some steam. Because I accidentally cut the tricot lining the wrong way, there was virtually no horizontal stretch. So basically, I would have had to pour myself into this dress, and that's just not happening! I reordered the tricot months ago and recut the midriff and skirt pieces last night. I reattached the midriff to the bodice last night as well, and tonight I hope to attach the skirt and finish the dress. The fabric is a shimmery pink knit from Fabric.com. It was $1.95/yard, and it's just gorgeous. It going to be the cutest party dress. So a review is forthcoming!

Next on the agenda is my Old School Friday pick. We had to pick a song that describes our current mood. I chose Troop's 1990 single "Spread My Wings." Classic joint, phenomenal choreography. They don't make R&B like this anymore. :-( I saw this group perform in my hometown when their second album, Attitude, came out. I had a major crush on the guy with the hair streak. He was so hot!

What I'm Up To

I caught the Burda WOF bug and decided to trace out some patterns I liked from the May 2009 issue. Here's what I'm working on:

Dress 103B. Pure hotness!

Dress 117B. I love the fabric!

Blouse 110 and Trousers 111. Looks cool and casual.

Okay there's really no reason to post all these tracing pictures, but I just wanted to show off my cute pattern weights. :-) **Idea courtesy of Faye.**

When I first heard of BWOF patterns, I balked at the idea of tracing out my own patterns. It just seemed like too much work. But once you sit down and determine what you want to trace, and you develop a good system, you can get on a good roll. It really isn't that much more work than separating several traditional tissue sheets, finding the pieces you need, and cutting them out. In a way, tracing my patterns makes me feel a little more in control.

That's really it for me. I don't have any fabric for these patterns yet, but both dress patterns are traced, and now I'm working on the Blouse 110. Since I have so many patterns already, I don't feel the need to go out and buy a bunch more (unless I really want it) when I have tons to choose from in BWOF. And also, it's an attempt to get the most for my $$$.

Old School Friday | Greatest of All Time!

When I read today's Old School Friday theme, this song was immediately what came to mind. I was going to the eighth grade when LL Cool J rocked the summer of 1991 with "Mama Said Knock You Out." I chose LL because out of all the rappers to come and go, I feel like he has had the most longevity.

Oh, and who can forget this joint? An ode to the "regular girl," one of my LL faves: "Around the Way Girl."

Review | Butterick 5250 High-waisted Pants

Pattern Description: Above waist, creased pants A, B, C have fly front zipper and back darts. A, B: front darts.

Pattern Sizing: I made View B in a size 12.

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing? Yes, I think so.

Were the instructions easy to follow? Yes, very much. Sewing fly fronts always freaks me out a bit, but these instructions are very straight forward and understandable. I thought it was odd that the left fly piece is a rectangle and not curved on the end, but it all went together smoothly.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? The crotch length seemed a bit deep. This actually works in my favor since I sit at a computer most of the day. So that issue is neutral. I liked everything else about this pattern, including the slimming silhouette, the darts, and the stylish high waist.

Fabric Used: Mystery $1/yd polyester from Wal-Mart. I bought the blouse fabric at the same time, and it was also $1/yd.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: N/A

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? Hmm...I'm not sure how many high-waisted pants a woman needs in her wardrobe, but I might make it up again in black or brown. I would recommend this pattern. It's an easy pants pattern, and it looks good with trendy tops.

Conclusion: Even though I made these pants with belt loops, I never made the belt. I was going to purchase a belt, but have not found one thin enough to thread through. So I'll be making the belt sometime this week.

McCall's 5522: Third Time's the Charm

In my last post I stated that McCall's 5522 blouse is one of those patterns I just can't get wrong. A week and a half ago I finished a third version inspired by Amanda S.'s and HLT's reviews. In contrast to my previous review, I made view A with the puffed sleeves in a size 8 with a C cup. I added a thinner version of the ruffle according to Amanda S.'s recommendations, and I also applied covered buttons.

I had planned on making the shirt and pants from New Look 6815 with the same fabrics, but somewhere along the line I decided that I wanted a more feminine, stylized look. So I chose the above McCall's top and Butterick 5250 high-waisted pants.

Well, here's the finished look. Please excuse any wrinkles. I took the pictures right after work today.

Poor choice of background, but you get the idea.

Questions and Answers about Sewing

This post is in response to Adrienne's sewing questionnaire.

Do you think clothes are made better if you don't take shortcuts?? If the short cut is efficient and just as durable, I see nothing wrong with it.

What kinds of shortcuts do you take when sewing, if any? Sometimes I'll machine stitch a collar band instead of slip stitching it, because of time. But for dress midriffs or seams where I need a clean finish, I'll take the time to slip stitch.

Does making BWOF instead of something from the Big 4 make you a better sewer? Hmm... It could make you a glutton for punishment! But seriously, I found making a BWOF time-consuming but very rewarding. Because the instructions are so sketchy, I had to rely on my sewing knowledge and sharpen my problem solving skills in order to complete the project.

Are your projects perfect? What will make you rip out and start again?? NO!!! I'll redo if a seam or top stitching is totally crooked, I selected the wrong stitch length, or if I sew the wrong pieces together. If seams that meet at a zipper are slightly off, I usually leave it. Really, no one else notices the minor flaws in my outfits, and I surely don't point them out!

What are you best at when it comes to sewing? What is your weak point? Best: matching fabrics and patterns. Worst: hemming! I really hate hemming. It's that last stretch of the project, and sometimes it's hard to get through with enthusiasm.

How many times will you make a TNT? Let's see, I've made McCall's 5522 thrice. A new review is forthcoming. This is a blouse I just can't get wrong. I made New Look 6557 four times. If I like a pattern, I make it at least twice.

What tips do you have for making jeans?! Have lots of patience. The top stitching really slows things down. Make sure you get some denim you can actually move in. I made some jeans that were supposed to have 3% lycra, and you really could have fooled me. Needless to say, I don't wear them much. BUT I made them, and that's what counts! ;-)

Do you use the blind hem feature on your machine!? Yes, I just used it to hem Butterick 5250. I didn't want an obvious seam showing on the outside. Review is forthcoming.

Is there a such thing as too much stash!?!? I personally don't like having tons of fabric hanging around. It feels kind of gluttonous to me. Plus, I have space issues and lack the room for an extensive stash. I keep my fabric in a large plastic tub. I haven't bought any fabric in say, eight months, because I have projects already lined up with fabric I need to use. I don't want to buy anymore fabric until I finish the projects I already have planned.

What has been the worst thing you have done while sewing something? Could you save your project? I sewed a zipper in a blouse too close to the teeth and could not, for the life of me, zip it up. I put the blouse on and it took me ten minutes to zip it. I had to cut myself out of the top and later threw it away. Another time I serged a hole in a skirt I was making. It about broke my heart. With some magical hand stitching, I was able to fix it, and I wear the skirt all the time.

When you mess up a project, do you feel bad or do you just move on? If I can fix it, I feel very accomplished. If it's just a dud, I move on. If I used nice fabric, I feel bad.

How many patterns do you have!?!? I would estimate 75. But including BWOF, it might be more like 200+.

What is your sewing process!? Usually I start with a fabric or a pattern I like. When I was a fabricoholic, I would buy the fabric first and retro fit it to a pattern that I thought was best suited for it. I've ceased wantonly buying patterns lately as well, because I have plenty to choose from at this time. Throw in BWOF, and I have enough patterns to last me a few years. But back to the process, after I pick out a pattern and fabric, I try to buy all of my notions at once so I don't have to stop in the middle of things and run out to the store. I sew when I have/make time. My sewing machine is next to my computer, so I usually listen to NPR, some radio show, or sermons (yes, sermons!) as I sew.

Is there anything wrong with being inspired by celebs?? I don't think so. But there aren't any celebrities I strive to emulate. It's hard to escape the influences of broader culture, but I like to think I have my own style.

Do you offer advice on other peoples projects?? Not unless they ask me or ask in general.

Do you accept advice/constructive critisim on your projects?? Yes, if I ask for it.

Do you think it makes you a better sewer??? Yes, if I understand the advice I'm given.

Pet Peeve of the Day

You know what annoys me? When you go the bathroom and there are fifty-eleven stalls, and for some crazy reason, the person who comes into the bathroom after you chooses the stall right next to you!

I mean, if there are fifty-eleven stalls in the bathroom to choose from, why can't that individual just move down one? Especially, if you are taking care of some business.

That's one reason why I miss my old office. We had one-room bathrooms so you could do your thing in peace.

Now we're in a new office with bathroom stalls, and it's a REAL adjustment.

Paying the Price

Okay, I'm back for a bit with this little rant.

A young lady said something weird to me on Sunday at my church's women’s dinner. We were doing this ice breaker where we had to find people who did certain things, and add their name to our list. An introvert's nightmare. Well, anyway, this young lady I am acquainted with made this weird comment about me being a “jack of all trades.” It was the way she said it, like "You're so good at everything." I don’t think she meant that as a slight ("Jack of all trades. Master of none."), but you never know with women. Well, look, I’ve acquired quite a few skills over the years. To best of my ability, the things I care about, I perform to excellence. I don’t do things half way--unless it’s card making. I’m definitely not a master at that, although I could be if I put my mind to it.

One can only do a handful of things well. I concentrate on dancing, singing, and sewing. I like to dibble and dabble in other things. There hasn’t been anything, recently, that I care to master. If I did, I would put forth the effort to make it happen. I really wondered what this woman was talking about. She’s uber-talented! She’s an artist. She paints, draws, makes pottery, plays guitar, sings, and leads a home group. I mean, the girl is fierce! Maybe she’s just missing the confidence. (See, this is why we women are in so much bondage, constantly comparing ourselves to one another. But that's another post.)

For example, when it comes to guitar, I just have not drummed up the wherewithal and discipline to sit down and learn that instrument. I’m thinking of going back to the piano. But there’s no reason for me to feel jealous and insecure because someone else is skilled in playing that instrument or has mastered it. He or she obviously put for the effort to learn that particular skill. They paid the price to be able to do it well. I’ve tried learning a few guitar chords, and believe me, it’s harder than it looks. It hurts your fingers! You have to continue playing through the pain and build up calluses so it doesn’t hurt any more. Honestly, at this point in time, I am not willing to pay the price to learn that instrument. So I can't be mad/jealous/insecure because someone else is better at it than me. I’ve got other things to focus on, and maybe if my life slows down, I’ll take another stab at it. But I’m not jealous of someone who plays the guitar with skill. I appreciate the pain and the awkwardness an individual had to go through in order to become proficient.

It’s the same way with dance. People compliment me often on my dancing skill, sometimes with a bittersweet wistfulness. Well, I didn't start yesterday. I’ve been dancing for over twenty years, and I strive to improve my skills. I love it, and I’ve invested a lot of time, effort, sweat, pain, sore muscles, scraped feet, and mental determination to become a good dancer. Not a great dancer, but a good dancer. I was not willing to pay the price to become a great dancer. But most people are not willing to pay the price to even become decent dancers, yet are frustrated when they can’t do basic movements. There is also a level of boldness you have to have as a dancer. You have be confident in your abilities and, at times, be willing to look like a fool. Some people don't want to look foolish because they care too much about others think of them. These people will always teeter at the edge of mediocrity.

It takes work! It takes determination! Dance, playing an instrument, singing well, being a artist, sewing, etc., is not easy if you want to be any good. There are no short cuts to brilliance. Talent helps, but work, determination, and persistence are what get you over the humps.

Were the instructions easy to follow? NO!!! I used the think people were exaggerating when they said that Burda WOF instructions were cryptic and indecipherable. Well, I got my first taste. In fact, I didn't even follow the directions that much in anticipation of the difficulty.

I made a muslin first, starting with the lining. No problem. I had a hard time trying to figure out the facings though. Just know that the center front has a line for the lining. You need to cut on this line for the lining, adding the seam allowance, and then attach it to the front facing.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? I love everything about this pattern: the 3/4 length sleeves, the safari styling, the belt loops, the pockets, and the top stitching.

Fabric Used: Silk noil for the fashion fabric and silk jacquard for the lining.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: N/A.

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? As frustrated as I got with this pattern, now that I've figured it out, I might sew it again in either black or red!

Conclusion: Awesome jacket! I debuted it this Sunday. It's perfect for the spring or cooler summer evenings. I know I'm going to have so much fun sporting this jacket this year!

Finishing Burda Jacket and Other Plans

You guys thought I forgot about the Burda jacket, didn't you? The jacket was set aside for a little bit, because I was getting frustrated. The books I ordered to help me with the notched collar took forever to get to me, so I just winged it.

Here's a sneak peak:

The jacket is all but complete except for the cuffs. The cuffs...

The free arm on my sewing machine is too wide for the cuffs fit around it. My mom offered to let me use her old Kenmore because the free arm on her machine is a little narrower. To no avail. The cuffs still didn't fit. ~~So that leaves me with no choice: I must hand stitch the cuffs to finish this jacket.~~ :-( Unless someone can give me another suggestion.

EDIT 3/20/09: Thank you Jackie, Beth, and Sigrid for your helpful suggestions! I had to just stop and think about it, and I finally visualized how to sew the cuffs. The jacket is complete, and hopefully a review will be up by Sunday!

On a brighter note, it's time to update my work wardrobe, and these are the patterns I've chosen.

Organizing Patterns

Over the last four years, my pattern stash had become a bit unwieldy for my taste. I had bunches of patterns crammed into those narrow paste board boxes, out of sight, out of mind, as I was beginning to forget what I had packed away.

A few weeks ago, I ran across this helpful tip on Pattern Review: Organizing Your Pattern Stash. The author of the tip, KarmenG, suggested something that made me gasp: separate my patterns and instruction from the envelope!

You see, I'm the kind of person who likes to keep everything together. When I was little, I wouldn't let my cousins put the wrong clothes on the wrong Barbies. Magic Curl Barbie's dress could not be put on Great Shape Barbie. That was the way I ran things.

So the thought of separating my patterns from the envelope was a bit disconcerting to me. But my pattern stash was a mess and unnavigable. So I thought I'd give it a try.

First, I bought a pack of page protectors and placed each pattern envelope in a sleeve. (Another tip: I ironed some of my "out of shape" envelopes to flatten them before I placed them in the page protectors.) Second, I sorted each envelope by garment and placed them in a 3-inch binder. I divided my binder into the following categories: Tops, Skirts/Pants, Dresses, Combos/Wardrobe, Jackets/Coats, Costumes, Accessories, and Crafts.

For my actual patterns, I bought gallon-sized Hefty storage bags, hanging folders, and two large crates. I placed each pattern in a storage bag with the instruction sheet facing out so I can clearly identify the pattern number and company. I then filed them in my hanging folders numerically, and placed them in the crates.

The beauty of this system is that I can now conveniently browse through my pattern collection and locate the pattern I wish to use when I am ready.

Here are all of my patterns stacked in the corner, easily accessible.

I'm still working on the Burda WOF jacket. We've had snow again! so I get an extra day to work on some sewing. Yay!

It's My Birthday! and BWOF Jacket Muslin is "Complete"

Hey, ya'll! It's my birthday today! At 6:36 am today, I turned--well, I'll just maintain the mystique and let ya'll guess. ;-)

I'm finally finished with my BWOF 02-2009-102 jacket muslin. This was a hard-fought muslin. I was about to give up my quest to tackle a BWOF pattern, but perseverance won out. Many thanks to Sigrid for answering some of my questions regarding the facings and the lining. It's just too complicated to explain now. I'll go into detail when I actually finish the jacket and review the pattern.

I purchased a couple of books a couple of days ago that I hope will help me sharpen my sewing skills, particularly how to sew a notched collar.

The Complete Photo Guide to Sewing: Revised and Expanded Edition

I also purchased Couture Sewing Techniques by Claire B. Shaeffer.

One of my goals this year is not so much about quantity sewing, but quality sewing. I want to focus on sewing fewer garments and really make the effort to practice excellent construction that I can be proud of.

BWOF 02-2009-102 Jacket Progress Part 2

Here are some progress photos of my jacket. I've been working on the outer portion, and sew far so good. Please forgive the wrinkles. It really does look better on me than on the dressform, and I am very pleased with the fit.

If you click on the picture for a larger view, you can see that the belt loops came out kind of small. I forgot to add a seam allowance for them. So I will add a 1/4" seam allowance to the belt loops. I just realized that I will have to add a seam allowance to the sleeve cuffs as well.

I thought the pockets came out okay. One was a little crooked. The blue "X"s indicate stitching I will omit. Or I might keep it. I have to keep reminding myself that this is my jacket, and it doesn't have to look exactly like the model.

Overall, I am very pleased with how this jacket is turning out. I really didn't know what to expect from a BWOF pattern. I had concerns that I did not trace the pieces out correctly, or they wouldn't go together smoothly. As I mentioned before, the fit is really good, and I believe this jacket will turn out to be one of my favorite projects.

Up next is the collar and sewing the outer portion to the lining.

A couple of months ago I deactivated my account only to reactivate it. Today I deleted my Facebook account.

Why did I do this? What was the last straw?

I found out on my updates page that the girl from my freshman year at college who convinced me that my first love was no good is now married to him with a child. And we had twelve mutual "friends."

There really is a reason why the past is the past.

What first drew me to Facebook?

1. I was pestered to join by a dancer friend I am no longer in contact with. We were supposed have lunch. But once I got on Facebook, those plans fizzled for some reason. Haven't heard from her in months.

2. I was seduced by the thought of reconnecting with old high school classmates and crushes.

3. I wanted to feel popular and well-liked.

4. I wanted to show off my craftiness and creativity, when really, I can do that here.

5. I wanted to stay in the loop, to feel included.

6. I wanted to compare my life with the lives of those I went to college with to see if I turned out better than them or not.

What finally convinced me to pull the plug?

1. The situation I described above. Just too much information. I could have done without it.

2. The high school mentality.

3. Nonsensical updates from people I'm not close to anyhow.

4. 95% of my "friends" were not real friends. Never were.

5. People who "friended" me but never wrote on my wall or contacted me in any way. I did the same as well.

6. I already see many of my "friends" during the week.

7. Disliked the idea of yet another third-party mediating my relationships with others.

The one good thing to come out of my Facebook stint is that I reconnected with my two best friends from college, and I'm planning on getting together with them face-to-face! That was a blessing.

BWOF 02-2009-102 Jacket Progress

So far, I have completed the muslin lining of the BWOF 02-2009-102 jacket. I traced out a 38, which is for a 34-1/2" bust.

This is a challenging pattern in that some of the seams didn't match up as well as they could have. This jacket has princess seams, and I had some trouble with getting the side front/front facing and side back/back to match. To solve this, I will stay-stitch on the front facing and back piece 5/8" (my seams are 3/4") and clip to the stitching to get the seam smooth on the curve. I already started on my outer fabric portion, and this seemed to work well over the initial easing on the side pieces.

Another thing that gave me trouble was the facing. I should have sewed the back facing to the front facings and then to the rest of the lining. Instead, I got it all mixed up by initially sewing the front facing to the side front, and then adding the sleeves and sewing the back facing on top of it all. Trust me when I say I had a confusing mess going on, and there was a lot of seam ripping and resewing to get it right.

Anyway, this is what the muslin lining looks like now. I tried it on, and so far so good. My only concern is that the hip is a little small on me, so the front facing doesn't completely overlap. But looking at the model photo, her jacket doesn't completely over lap at the bottom either, so I think I'm good. But maybe I'll widen the pattern at the hips a bit.

Here's a view of the back.
It's puckering due to the fact that the seam is not completely sewn. I'm trying the "bagging a lining" technique, and you have to leave an opening to turn the whole jacket right side out at the end. Again, looking at the model photo, I don't think the jacket is supposed to lay completely smooth, but it's to be worn with a belt for some cinching at the waist. Well, well see once I get the outer portion together.

I'm really going to do it this time!

Last year I had every intention of sewing a Burda World of Fashion pattern. I actually did, with much consternation, end up tracing a blouse pattern, but alas, grew faint of heart and never had the guts to complete the project.

But when I saw the 02-2009-102 Jacket, I knew I had to bite the bullet.

I love everything about this jacket. I love the 3/4 gathered raglan sleeves, the cute belt, the top stitching. Just everything! It looks so stylish and light, perfect for the spring.

When it came to attempting a BWOF last year, what really discouraged me last time was the tracing process, as I could not figure out how to do it well or efficiently. This time around, I think I finally got the hang of it.

I used vellum tracing paper for my pattern pieces, and marked all of the internal markings before outlining the pattern. Then I inked my double tracing wheel with water-based ink, with my wheels set at 3/4". So my seam allowance is larger than usual, but I think it's fine since it will give me a little extra wiggle room.

The material of the jacket the model is wearing is faux silk noil, but I decided to get the real thing from Thai Silks. My lining is the dark brown jacquard. I bought my muslin fabric last night, and I'm pretty much set to start.

Review | Vogue 1020 Knit Top

Pattern Description: Vogue 1020 close-fitting top with side ruching.

Pattern Sizing: 6-12. I made a 10.

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing? Yes.

Were the instructions easy to follow? I didn't really follow the instructions. After joining the shoulders (I serged all of the seams), I sewed the sleeves in flat. (Now I wish had gone back and done the collar before the sleeves.) Then I sewed up the shorter side and arm (nixing the zipper) and used clear elastic to gather the longer side. Then I machine-basted the other arm, and serged the whole length for the finish. I didn't have any trouble with gaping at the neck, and I used a double needle to finish all of the hems.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? I loved the ruching, 3/4 length sleeves, and the length of the top.

Fabric Used: Cotton stretch jersey.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: I omitted the zipper.

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? Yes, I might sew this again in black. I would highly recommend this top. It's very easy and a good wardrobe builder.

Pattern Sizing: 6-14. I made a 10.

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing? Yes.

Were the instructions easy to follow? Very. The raglan sleeves made things so much easier. I just suggest taking your time on the collar to keep the stitching straight.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? I like the gathered scoop neck, sleeves, and bottom hem.

Fabric Used: Sheer onion skin fabric from Wal-Mart and printed stretch jersey.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: On the pink shirt, I shortened the hem by 2". I wish I had left it long.

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? Since I made it twice, to go with jeans, I will probably not make this again. This is a good beginner pattern, in my opinion, because it is very simple to put together.

Conclusion: Nice quick top if you're looking for an instant gratification project!

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing? I made the large portfolio, and, yes, it did look like the model picture.

Were the instructions easy to follow? The instructions were very easy to follow, and are good for beginners because they are so detailed. That pattern pieces are a series of rectangles. I used regular printer paper for my pattern.

Instead of chipboard, which the instructions call for, I used cardboard from a shipment I received. Where the cardboard was deeply creased, I reinforced with packaging tape. Incidentally, the instructions use chipboard and cardboard interchangeably.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? I love all the pockets. I like mixing and matching fabrics to create a vibrant, albeit, busy look. I wish, however, that the pattern included a large pocket on the inside. When I make it again, I may try to create a large inner pocket.

Fabric Used: Amy Butler Belle Pine/Coriander and Olive/Kashmir.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: The only real change I made was that I used covered buttons in place of the fabric-covered brads that the instructions suggest. The look is virtually the same.

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? I will sew it again, and I will most likely make the smaller portfolio as well. It is a nice craft that can be easily personalized for gifts.

Snow and Cardmaking Frenzy

It snowed today in North Carolina, and Raleigh got 4-6 inches of the white stuff! I was actually thinking about driving 20 miles to my job in Durham this morning, and then common sense kicked in. I took a vacation day, took some pictures of the snow, watched the inauguration of President Barack Obama (raises hands in praise), talked with a friend on phone, and made some cards!

New McCall's Patterns

Okay, my inner hippie chick is really singing.

These are my favorite two patterns from McCall's new spring line up.

Aww...I just love the flounciness of it all, particularly the middle dress. You know me and my maxi dress obsession. I can see this in a delicate cotton lawn. And according to the line drawing, there is some smocking or ruching on the shoulder. I think that's a nice touch.

5812And don't get me started on long skirts. This would great in a crinkled cotton gauze paired with a camisole. I love this whole look. Perfect for North Carolina's warm springs and humid summers.

I still don't have any real sewing plan to speak of. My sewing room is a chaotic mess right now. I was making another tea wallet in a brocade, and got distracted mid-production. Last night, I didn't do any sewing at all, but I watched Youtube videos all night. Hey, at least I wasn't sitting in front of the TV, not that I'm knocking people who do... Needless to say, I was unproductive. My mind is more on the crafty side of things. There are some cute Amy Butler sewing projects I'm interested in trying. And since Fabric.com is having a sale on quilting fabrics, I may be able to indulge in a little splurge.

I'm still feeling a little guilty about my defunct Summer 2008 Swap. But I don't think I'll be doing any swapping for a while. I'm okay with a few orphaned numbers.

Plans for the New Year

I have to admit that I have no iron clad sewing plan for the New Year. Most of my projects are carry overs from 2008, items I cut out but never got around to sewing.

But I'm in no hurry to get to them. I feel no compulsion to tackle another project and slave away at my sewing machine. I just feel very relaxed about it all.

The new Simplicities just came out. There are actually a few I dig. Here's my take on some of the new patterns.

Hello, Cleopatra! The top dress looks very Egyptian-inspired. However, I love the view in the top middle. Though it calls for a woven, it might be really nice and comfy in a jersey print or stylish mesh knit.

These pants look very familiar. I guess the major difference is that the pattern is drafted for different body shapes.

I love the jacket in this pattern.

Is anyone else tired of tunics besides me? These two patterns are just rehashes of the same old trend.

I am kind of feeling these tunics though.

This one would be especially cute in sheer fabric.

Lessons from a Towel Rack

First of all, I want to say thank you to those who left me some encouraging words on my Life Shifts post. Just to clarify, I haven't fallen off the wagon or anything. I was just in my contemplative, I-need-to-figure-out-my-life mode.

This may sound odd, but I learned a very valuable life lesson through a simple towel rack--you know, that single chrome bar that you mount to your wall in the bathroom.

For over a year, I had been struggling with this rogue towel rack. The rack was installed by my ex too high for my 5'6" stature, and it was mounted into drywall, not wooden studs, so it had no anchor. In addition to being too high, the rack was not stable, and at times it would become completely dismounted from the wall.

I would grumble and complain every time the bar would clank to the floor from me trying to remove or place my towel. I tried sticking the screws back through the mounting into the wall, but they would never stay put. I even thought about repositioning the rack a little lower, but I live in an apartment and did not want to put more holes in the wall.

A couple of weeks ago, I went to visit my cousin, and I noticed that she had an over-the-door towel rack, and it seemed to work just right. I’ve never really been a fan of those kinds of towel racks, but something struck me. I realized that the solution to my problem was right at hand: “I’ll just get one of those over-the-door towel racks. That will fix my problem!”

So I finally went out and bought one for $8.99, which was a small investment for my peace of mind and sanity. The rack assembled easily and quickly, and it was on the door closest to my shower in a matter of minutes. I marveled at how such a simple solution to a frustrating problem could have alluded me for so long.

But soon after I had to ask myself, why did I put up with a poorly mounted, unreliable towel rack for so long when the solution was so simple? Why did I suffer for over a year with that annoying rack? Why didn’t I get a replacement sooner? I could have saved myself a year’s worth of grumbling.

In a way, I believe I became comfortable with the dysfunction. I couldn’t think of any other way of existing, because I was trying to make something work that had proven that it was not going to work. Just like that towel rack that was not anchored properly into the wall, so many times we go through situations and relationships that are not well-anchored. But we struggle with them and try to persevere, becoming accustomed to the dysfunction in hopes that things will get better eventually. How many times do we suffer with circumstances for long periods of time without giving a second thought to the possibility that there might be a way out of our misery? The solution may be simple; it may be complicated. But there is a solution. There’s always another way.

Sometimes we need to branch out and see new things. It took me driving three and a half hours to South Carolina to see my cousin for the light bulb to switch on for me. If I hadn’t gone, I might still be grumbling and complaining about my stupid towel rack.

I guess I’m saying all this to say, don’t get comfortable with dysfunction, whether it be in your job, your relationships, or even something as simple as a towel rack. Branch out and seek solutions to your frustrations. I don’t think God wants us to live in constant frustration and discord. He wants to see us prosper and thrive, full of life and purpose. Remember, with Him, there is always a solution. There is always another way. And that way is Life.

Review | McCall's 5752 Dress

When I saw Mimi's version of this dress, I just had to make my own!

Pattern Description: McCall’s 5752 Dress B has a gathered, wrapped bodice, gathered self-lined midriff, A-line skirt, gathered shawl collar and extended overarms; dress B is mid-knee length.

Pattern Sizing: I made a 10, but sized down the top to probably a 6 in the end.

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you completed your project? Yes, but I was surprised at how "boyish" this dress made me look before I took in the side seams. Also, my back gathers droop/flop.

Were the instructions easy to follow? Well, I didn't pay to much attention to the directions other than sewing the back and front shoulder and neck seams. Based on the suggestions of some PR reviewers, I sewed the front pieces, then the back pieces, and then straight up the sides seams (to avoid having to sew tubes together).

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? I liked the look of capped sleeves, and I love surplice necklines. In the end, I guess I wasn't that crazy about the ruching in the front, or in the back since it drooped a little bit. Maybe just a simple flat midriff would look nicer on me. Also, I don't know if this was my fabric or from picking the wrong size, but my bodice also droops and gapes a bit. The jersey I used is on the thin side with lots of stretch, so maybe this is the reason. But the facing keeps wanting to flop out, and it could produce a few self-conscious moments. Also that pattern has alteration lines on the actual pieces. They were not very helpful to me, but to those who understand them, I sure they could be very helpful.

Pattern Alterations or any design changes you made: Also like other reviewers, I left off the midriff facings. But I did use the stays to maintain the gathers inthe front and the back. I originally cut a 10, but I had the take the top way in, beyond the 1" seam allowance. I think I ended up taking in another whole inch.

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? I might sew this again in an 8 and in a solid color. If you sew this, you may want to go down a couple of sizes.

Conclusion It's not bad. It's pretty cute.

Life shifts and other thoughts

I feel like I've been such a bad blogger lately. Not only have I not felt like posting, but I just haven't been visiting others' blogs very much either. I've been a bit of a cyber-hermit, which I guess isn't always a bad thing. I haven't touched my other two sites in a while, and don't plan to either.

Sometimes I look at other people's blogs and marvel at their frequency of updates or the volume of their readership. Sometimes I don't really know what to say on this blog, so I keep it safe, sticking to sewing or non-personal topics. Being single, I don't have a lot of family stuff to post. I don't have any children, so no cute kid pics. I don't have a significant other, so no cute couple pics. I don't even go out that much, so no life out-on-the-town pics either.

I can't say that I haven't been sewing though. After I finished my jeans, I made a top to go with it (review is forthcoming). I'm in the process of making another top, and for some reason, I've been on this pink kick, because my next three projects will be pink. Maybe this is a throwback to my now defunct Summer 2008 SWAP, where pink was the theme. It's still in my system, so I need to get it out.

I've been going through some changes during the past few months--some real shifts in my life--and I have a couple of significant decisions to make. Trusting that God will lead me--that is the biggest challenge. Cutting off relationships, letting some die a natural death, nurturing new ones. That's been my focus as of late. I'm tired of apartment living and looking into buying a house (it's raining, and the ceiling is leaking again for the umpteenth time). But then I wonder if I'm just trying to live someone else's dream because a house looks good in her life. Dreaming of love, of a life elsewhere and what could be and hoping I'm not setting myself up for another disappointment...

Thanks to those who do come around here and check out what I have to post and say. I appreciate your comments and encouragement. Sorry for being such an unfaithful blogger. Hopefully, I'll get my act together and try to be more engaging. You guys have a great weekend.

I had some more fun with stamps today. I got to use my "cute weeds" set (aka Stampin' Up Pocket Silhouettes).

I have taken a short break from sewing. Those jeans did me in! I did make a top to go with them out of Simplicity 2971 with a nice jersey print. I'll post pics sometime this week.

Review | McCall's 5142 Jeans

Pattern Description: McCall's 5142 Jeans, Jeans in two lengths have front pockets with optional coin pocket, fly front, back patch pocket, back yoke, carriers, topstitch detail and waistband variation; jeans A, B, C are slim-fitting with slightly low-rise waist (2" below waist) and boot leg.

Pattern Sizing: 10-16. I made a 12.

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing? Well, sure.

Were the instructions easy to follow? They were easy to follow, but not quite so easy to execute. But then again, I always have trouble with fly fronts. Some pieces were down right funky like the fly that is cut out in a rectangle, but then you have to trace the stitching lines. Why doesn't the pattern company just have you cut out the actual shape? I thought the back yoke was a little too big, and it pushed down the position of the pockets.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? I liked the boot leg cut. I did not like the waistband for View B/C. When I put it on, it gaped horribly at the back, just like the jeans in the store. I took apart the section at the center back, opened the waistband and sewed a 1" wide diamond in the center to create a dart. This took in the necessary gapage (and you can see where the waistband dips in the back), but created some bulk at the seam. However, I am happy that the gape is gone, and I should be able to where close-fitting tops with these pants now, without a belt.

Also, just the construction of these jeans was draining. I used upholstery-weight thread for the seams, serged the raw edges, and of course, used yellow top-stitching thread. I had to switch the thread often,and I alternated between my blind hem foot for the edge-stitching and the zig-zag foot for the top-stitching.

Finding the right tension for the thread was a challenge as well. Starting out, the tension was set too low and my thread kept jamming in the machine. Finally, I figured out that I need to set it way high, like on 8 or 9, and that seemed to do the trick.

Fabric Used: Dark blue "stretch" demin. I put stretch in quotes because I don't detect a bit of stretch in this fabric. It's supposed to have 3% lycra, but you could have fooled me.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: The waistband, as noted above.

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? IF I make these pants again, I would widen them to a 14 in the hips, increase the crotch depth by an inch, and use the contoured waistband instead. I would also choose a lighter color denim.

Conclusion: I'm glad these jeans are finished! I'm off to easier projects.

Review | Vogue 8379 Wrap Dress

Pattern Description: Vogue 8379 wrap front dress has soft pleats, side tie, and sleeve variations. Dress B has collar.

Pattern Sizing: 8-14, 16-22. I made a 10.

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing? Yes!

Were the instructions easy to follow? Yes! This picture doesn't really show the vibrancy of the fabric, but you get the idea.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? I've seen this pattern reviewed on Pattern Review over thirty times, and the dress looks great on so many different body types, shapes, and sizes. I had to try it for myself. I like the fact that the neckline doesn't gape. I like the simple, yet elegant design of this dress.

Fabric used: Printed matte jersey from Fabric.com.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: I did not include the facings. I serged the edge of the bodice and neckline, and then just turned under and stitched.

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? Yes, I want to sew this again in black. I would highly recommend this to others.

Conclusion I wore this dress to a "retro" party on Halloween. I think it counts since the dress was designed in the 1970s. Get this pattern! :-D

Review | Simplicity 2812 Project Runway Jacket

Pattern Description: Simplicity 2812 Project Runway Collection Misses Lined Jacket

Pattern Sizing: 4–12. I made a 10.

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing? Yes!

Were the instructions easy to follow? I was actually going to use Sandra Betzina technique of bagging the lining, but this requires one to add a center seam in the back lining pieces. Since I had already cut out all of fabric without much to spare, I ditched this idea. However, I did end up following her sequence of completely constructing the lining, and then completely constructing the jacket and did not look at the instructions much.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? I like the style, and I like the various collars and sleeve treatments. I did not like the way they have you finish the hem on the sleeves and the bottom. The coat is supposed to have a dropped lining, but I think I prefer to just sew the coat and lining so that they are flush, instead of the extra lining fabric I had at the bottom of the hem.

Fabric used: The brown quilted fabric featured on the pattern envelope. I found it at Jo-Ann’s for $14.99/yd. Thank goodness I had a coupon! For the lining, I used a lavender brocade, also from Jo-Ann’s.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: n/a

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? Yes, I would sew this again. I want to use some of the components to make a light jacket like one I have seen in a department store. I would highly recommend this pattern to others..

Conclusion: I needed a jacket for the fall, and this is it. I wore it on a day trip to King’s Dominion, and it ended up being the perfect jacket for the sixty degree weather.

1. I was born in and lived in Burlington, Vermont, for the first eleven years of my life. Though I have lived in North Carolina for almost 20 years, I will always consider Vermont my home.

2. In January 2008, I decided to "go natural." That means that I have ceased to relax, or chemically straighten, my hair. I have been 100% chemical free since August 11, and I love it!
