Hair Journey Retrospective

As the year is winding down, I'm sure a lot of you sewists out there are taking stock of your 2009 creations. I thought about doing that, but instead wanted to quickly chronicle my hair journey. If you've been following my blog for more than two years, you have noticed that my hair has changed quite a bit. I have gone from relaxing my afro-textured hair to what we black women call "going natural." In January 2008, I made decision to stop chemically relaxing my hair. I wore a weave for a good four or five months while I grew out my natural hair. By August of 2008, I was ready for what we in the natural community call the Big Chop. I cut off all of my relaxed hair ends to reveal about three inches of tightly coiled hair--my hair. It was the most liberating experience for me. To this very day, I consider going natural one of the best decisions I have made for my self. Below are a series of pictures dating from September 2008 until present that chronicle my natural hair journey. I hope you all enjoy it. Please feel free to leave your questions or comments.

You look down right joyful! Gorgeous head of hair. My daughter is doing the same thing and the chile is having too much fun. She does a lot of research because her arsenal of haircare products has changed. Has it for you?

Hi, Dei! You know, that is so funny. The day I took the last picture in the pink shirt, I had just sung "Joyful Joyful" at church!

To answer your question, yes, my collection of haircare products have changed. I used to swear by Motions, but now I've found that conditioner cleanses my hair just fine, and it's much more gentle. I also use my own special shea butter mix as a "base" before I twist or braid my hair. It's too much to go into right now, but yeah, I've become quite the product junkie. I'm going to try my first henna treatment this week!

I LOVE all of the pics of your journey! I am also on that journey...the second time around. The first time was for 10 years. My recent BC was in Sept. 2009 so I look forward to this journey again, with new lines of natural products and with an even broader perspective! Congrats!!!

Love your hair --it is beautiful! I chopped off my hair back in 95 when it wasn't quite so accepted. It has been a long and crazy ride but one that has been worth it for me. Thanks for sharing. We'll have to talk products one day:)
